The most popular Hand embroidery art forms are Aari Embroidery & Zardosi Embroidery.

In this blog let us explain to you different types of needles or hooks that are used in doing these embroidery arts.

Aari Embroidery & Tambour Embroidery Needles:-

1) Aari Needles:- These are basically hand made needles, very popular in Asia made from a single Iron wire with or without a wooden handle. The tip at the needle is always hand made according to the customer requirement. These needles are so famous & are customer's delight is because you don’t have to pass the whole needle through the fabric like crewels or beading needles. You just have to penetrate the fabric, pull the thread from the other side of the fabric, and make a loop to do embroidery with supplies or make chain stitches like tambour work. It makes the work faster and has less chance of distorting the fabric yarns. You can buy these needles at the price of Rs10/Piece (USD$0.13/Piece). Two basic designs are there in this style

A) Aari needles for Sequins, Beads & Rhinestones:- Whenever you need a needle to do embroidery with supplies other than thread then buy this style of the needle. These needles have a long thin neck before the handle. So, that you can pass it through supplies & put them over it.

We have two sizes in this style, 0.5MM & 0.72MM thickness needle.  0.5MM needle is especially for Miyuki, M.G.B, Toho & other small Japanese beads of hole size 0.65 mm approximately. Buy this needle only if you are using these beads. It’s a very thin needle and can penetrate only thin fabrics. We have a wooden & metal handle in this style. It’s only for your comfort. If you are an embroidery beginner then buy the needle with a short neck. It will be easy to handle.

0.72MM needle is good for Rhinestones, Sequins & glass beads of size 8/0mm & above. These needles are stiff and don’t bend easily. You can use these needle on thick fabrics. If you need to do embroidery with smaller size beads on a thick fabric then use these needles first to penetrate the fabric and then use the above needle to do embroidery. We only have a wooden handle in this style. Buy a long neck needle only if you are confident about your embroidery skills.

B) Aari Needle for Threads: - These needles have bigger tip than the above needles. So, that you can put 1 or more strands of threads on it easily. Threads like cotton & metallic threads need needle with bigger tip. These needle have small thick neck and always-in gradation. Thin at the tip and thick near the handle.

We make these needles with 1MM thickness. You can use these to do hand embroidery of bigger size beads & sequins also.  We have these needles with the variation of the length of the neck but only with wood handle.

If you think you are using a very light fabric that can be destroyed by using this big size needle. Then you can choose the below needles also for doing aari hand embroidery with threads. These are specially made for thin fabrics to do thread embroidery.

2) Tambour Hook: - This is basically an exclusive version of the Aari needles. Also, called as French Luneville hook. You can do both supplies & threads embroidery with this needle. These needle are stiff & doesn’t bend easily. The tambour hook set with 3 different size of needle (0.7MM, 0.9MM & 1MM) & a wooden handle will cost you Rs499 (USD$6.57).

Because of the brass screw on the wooden handle, you can change the needle according to your size requirement. Whenever you change the needle, please remember that the open mouth of the needle tip is always towards the side of the screw. It makes the work easy because you will not be able to see the needle tip at the other side of the fabric but the screw can give you an idea at which side the opening is on the tip and you will easily put the thread on it with another hand.

It’s popular in Europe continental and was earlier used in making laces. You use the same technique as aari needles to do embroidery with these tambour hooks.

Some Artist who uses these hooks put sequins; beads or other supplies on a thread first and then do embroidery from underneath the fabric, which is quite different than the aari needle embroidery. This kind of beading process is called French beading.

Zardosi Embroidery Needles:-

Needlepoint work & anchor thread embroidery work is done by these needles. These needles are very popular for thread work. Many intricate designs of thread work can only be made through zardosi embroidery art only. It’s a more exclusive & couture embroidery art form. Most of the embroidery designs by using French wire, bullion wires & other hollow metallic wires are made by using these needles only. If you are planning to do embroidery on a round frame or on any other frame in which you need to use one hand to hold the frame then use these needles only.

As many people say that you shouldn’t lick the thread to put it through the needle eye because it rusts the needle. And because of the rust in needle eye, your thread will be distorted many times while doing embroidery. So, to overcome that we have self-threading needles in which you can put the thread in the needle eye even while your eyes are closed. Always remember that the bigger the number the thinner the needles are in this style. So, for example, if you have a size 10 and size 11 crewels needles then size 10 needle will be thicker than size 11 needle.

Crewels Needles: - Use pony brand crewels needles to do thread work. These needles have sharp points and often-big eye. So, those 2 to 5 strands of fine threads or a single strand of thick thread can be passed through the eye. This needle packet of 25 pieces will cost you Rs50 (USD$0.66).

Beading Needles: - These needles have a sharp point and a small eye. Only one strand of thread can pass through the eye. The eye is small. So, that the whole needle can easily pass through the beads, sequins & rhinestones holes.  The 25 pieces packet of this needle will cost you Rs79 (USD$1.09).

Mukaish Needles: - These needles have flat surface rather than round surface like other needles. The eyehole design of the needle is a rectangle. These needles are specially made to work with flat metallic mukaish strips.  A single piece of this needle will cost you Rs175 (USD$2.31).
