Goldwork embroidery is an ancient art of luxurious surface embroidery wo20/12/202422/03/2021rk that was done on apparels, bags and shoes with real gold or silver threads, wires and spangles for kings, queens and other prominent nobilities. This priceless goldwork embroidery art is again big in fashion and one of the reasons is the availability of affordable Metallic wires, Threads and other supplies of goldwork embroidery. And also let’s not forget to appreciate all those artists who made it affordable by finding new better techniques for doing embroidery and making its supplies.

 

In this Blog, we will explain different types of Threads, Wires and Other supplies that are used in goldwork embroidery.

Goldwork Threads: - There are two types of threads that is used. First one is Cotton or Silk threads (as shown in below picture) wrapped with metallic or plastic strip in continuous length. These are also called Japan threads. Be careful while using these threads because the upper strip of metal or plastic can be unrolled.

 

The other types of thread are fully made from metal or plastic. These threads are usually made from copper metal and can be found in round or flat surface. You can use both the threads as couching threads.

 

 

Goldwork Wires: - Earlier-real gold and silver metal were used to make these wires. Now, copper metal is used in making these wires. There are three prominent types of metallic wires French Purl wire (The delicate and smooth wire), Bullion Check Purl Wire (The Shiny & crinkled wire) and the Gimp Pearl Purl Wire (the stiff & Continuous Wire).

For surface embroidery, all these goldwork wires need to be cut in small or big pieces with the help of scissor and all of them are hollow from inside. Easily a needle with thread can be passed through or over them.

 

 

Goldwork Spangles: - In these modern times, Spangles made from brass metal are the first choice of embroiderer. Never buy if they are made from Iron because it will get rust very fast. These spangles can be quite heavy for dresses and accessory. So, it’s better to buy them with less thickness. Silver and Gold color spangles in round shape are still the most used supplies then other shapes like leaf, flower etc.

 Wit modern techniques, the spangles are also made from food grain plastic. They are shiny, available in different shapes and are very lightweight. Whenever you are buying spangles for goldwork embroidery always check that they are lead free, Phthalate Free and Cadmium Free. Its safe to use this quality of spangles. 

Goldwork Needle & Scissors: - As someone has put it beautifully – Happiness is getting a good quality needle and scissor. We believe in it totally. There are many needles that can be used for different kind of goldwork embroidery. Always test different needles; it will make you work easy and affordable also. The popular needles are Aari Needles, Zardosi Needles, Mukaish needle and Tambour needle.

 

 

And for scissors we just have one and only recommendation and that is this beautiful big thumb scissors. Please keep one scissors separately for Goldwork wires.
